Tips for Tiling a Bathroom

Tiling is a task that needs skill and experience. There are some tiling projects that you can do on a DIY project as well but you need to be careful about complicated projects. There are many things that can go wrong in tiling and you should have the right equipment for the job.

You will also need a tile cutter, a pencil to mark glossy surfaces, a tile nipper when shaping a tile around a pipe, a bucket, tile spacers, a notched trowel to spread the adhesive on the wall or floor, a mixing paddle, a spirit level, sponges and a grout float. You need to make sure you have a plan in place before you tile so that you know which walls are to be tiles, the sizes of the tiles you are using and the heights that you are tiling up to.

Once you measure the area, you will know the quantity of tiles to purchase and all you need to do is select the tiles you need afterwards. Make sure you purchase some extra to account for wastage. There are different tiles that are best for different applications so make sure that you choose the right one for the job. There are also different tile patterns to consider as well such as linear, diamond, herringbone, hexagon etc. You need to prepare the walls before you tile them. This requires cleaning the wall so that it is dry and flat. Cover any holes you find in the plaster as well. There are different adhesives that you can use to stick the tiles to the wall.  You can go for a ready mix adhesive when you are tiling a bathroom in your house. Grout is not used to fix tiles to a wall. This is used to fill in the gaps between the tiles. This helps seal the tiles so that no water gets into the wall.

The type of grout you choose will depend on the type of tiles you are using. For natural stone tiles, a sealant will have to be used. But generally, epoxy grouts are commonly used with a variety of tiles for optimum sealing. There is cementitious grout as well. It can be a little hard to work with epoxy grout as it will set very fast so you need to have prior experience and skill to do this. You need to make sure that the wall you are laying the tiles on is straight. This can be checked with a spirit level. You need to set out the tiles before you start so that you know where to start and what tiles to cut.
